The model Jesus used for healing prayer consisted of at least one and sometimes a combination of the following, as indicated by the verses below:

  1. Almost 69% of the time an action to be obeyed was spoken. (20 times out of 32)
  2. Almost 47% of the time a touch was used. It was usually the hand or part that needed healing. (15 times out of 32)
  3. Almost 16% of the time a statement that healing had occurred was spoken. (5 times out of 32)
  4. Almost 10% of the time a command to be healed was spoken. (3 times out of 32)
  5. Almost 10% of the time compassion or heart felt emotion toward the sick was described. (3 times out of 32)
  6. 28% of the time, Jesus initiated prayer/healing for the person getting healed. (7 times out of 25)
  7. 28% of the time, the disciples initiated prayer/healing for the person getting healed. (2 times out of 7)
  8. 71% of the time, people came to or called out to Jesus or the disciples for prayer/healing. (23 times out of 32)

Some points I noticed about Jesus’ healings:

  • Jesus was performing the healing in God’s name, fully human and empowered by the Holy Spirit, one with the father. Therefore, He did not have to say In my name or In God’s name. I don’t know why the disciples said “In Jesus name” in Acts, or why Paul and Peter did not say “in Jesus name” more in the epistles.
  • Interestingly enough, in Mark 9:38-39 an unsaved person was going around casting out demons in the name of Jesus and Jesus did not know it, and did not condemn this activity. In Matthew 7:22, Jesus also indicates that His name has so much power, that even people whom He never knew, WILL(not might or maybe) perform miracles, cast out devils, and prophecy using His name. In Luke 10:17, the 72 disciples came back reporting that even the demons obey them when they used His name. Using the phrase “In Jesus name” in conjunction with healing is demonstrated broadly enough that I incorporate it. I think testifies to the power of His name, let alone faith in that name.
  • Jesus boldly and authoritatively referred to himself a lot in these healings using (“I”) as did the disciples. It was not because Jesus was operating in His divinity or in the power of the human self(soul). It was because as Acts 10:38 said, God was with Him as He was anointed by the Holy Spirit. God was also in His disciples and they were in Him, one with Him, so “I” was appropriately describing them ALL, the combination of the new creation, Jesus/Holy Spirit in us. Samuel was told something similar when he was anointed in 1 Samuel 10:7.
  • The healings usually took place after any of the above 4 things were done by Jesus or the disciples WHILE faith was being excercised.
  • Almost 49% of the time, an exclamation mark is used. (16 times out of 32)

In all 32 healings listed below, both Jesus and the disciples held the majority of faith:

  1. Out of all 32 healings below, only 3 times(for 4 people), was the faith of the sick/diseased/lame person attributed to their own healing.
  2. Out of all 32 healings below, only 4 times or 12.5% of the time, Jesus prayed for a friend or family member of the person requesting prayer. The faith of these 4 people were added to the faith of Jesus and the disciples, and healing took place in the person they came on behalf of.
  • Almost 79% of the time, the faith of Jesus or His disciple was the ONLY faith involved in the healing.
  • Exactly 9.1% of the time, the faith of the person being healed was the ONLY faith involved in the healing
  • Almost 91% of the time, the faith of Jesus or His disciple was the PRIMARY faith involved in the healing. The faith of person being healed, or the person requesting prayer was added to the faith of Jesus or His disciple as a secondary source.

Below is a listing of every healing of Jesus and the disciples, correlated with the items above beginning in Matthew through the end of Acts.

    ———————————————————————
  4. Mark 2:4-12; John 5:8 – An action to be obeyed:
4 They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” 10 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”Who prayed: Jesus
Who had faith: Jesus/ 4 men carrying the paralyzed man

In John 5:13 The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.
14 But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.”
15 Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.

**Notice that man went on continuing in some sort of sin. Jesus made it a point to tell this man to stop sinning LEST-[in order to avoid, for fear that, in order to prevent] something worse happening to him. This indicates that after a healing, sowing and reaping can contribute to not only the same sickness/disease returning but that it can become worse or that something new that is worse can occur.

**Notice that Peter did not say Look to God, heaven, or the Holy Spirit in verse 4. They said look at us, why? The Holy Spirit was in them and they were acting like Christ…..being Christlike. In verse 6, Peter continues and says what “I” have “I” give you, not God please give it to him or God is going to do this or that, or God wants to do this or that. They were acting in the Stead of Christ because in chapter 1:8 they received power to do so. They were identified with Christ, they were being the hands of Christ to this man.

After talking until daylight, he left. 12The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.Who prayed: Paul
    Who had faith: Paul
    Who was healed: Eutychus
    Who initiated: Paul
    ———————————————————————
  22. Acts 28:7-8 – Touch:
7 Near the shore where we landed was an estate belonging to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us and treated us kindly for three days. 8 As it happened, Publius’s father was ill with fever and dysentery. Paul went in and prayed for him, and laying his hands on him, he healed him.Who prayed: Paul
    Who had faith: Paul
    Who was healed: Publius’ father
Who initiated: Unclear, but probably at Publius’ request

** Who healed him? Paul did, why? Because Paul had been (past tense) freely given power(acts 1:8) and authority(Luke 10:19) and the ministry and word of reconciliation(2 Corinthians 5:18-19) and as that Ambassador of Christ, he fulfilled God’s will on earth as it should be in heaven(Matthew 6:10).
